Followed closely after our beta announcement we are extremely happy to release the third beta of DOCman 2.0. This release adds 6 major new features and tons of smaller optimisations and fixes.

This beta has been 4 months in the making, and we understand some of you have been waiting impatiently. You know, we have a mantra over here at Joomlatools : our software will be ready when it’s ready. We don’t enjoy making you wait, but we take great pride in releasing Joomla extensions that are engineered for easy of use, long-term stability and performance.

Key Features

The DOCman 2.0 Beta 3 includes all features mentioned in our previous DOCman 2.0 Alpha Blog Post and Beta Blog Post, plus the following exciting new features.

1. Document Image and Auto Thumbnail functionality

We integrated the DOCman Thumbs functionality. DOCman 2 is now capable of generating thumbnails of your documents on the fly, if possible. Thumbnails can be manually regenerated and cleared. You can also upload your own document images instead of generating a thumbnail.

After saving your document with the automatically generate image option selected the thumbnail will appear.

2. Download and preview behavior changes

Before, DOCman used to have separate Preview and Download buttons, but as of Beta 3 we no longer have a Preview button. Instead, DOCman is no longer force downloading documents, it leaves this up to the browser to decide how to handle the document: either display it or download it.

With support for PDF reading in modern browsers like Chrome and Firefox 15+ this also means people can easily read PDF files in the browser and additionally this changes solves problems with file downloads on mobile devices.

We also added improved support for Google Viewer. If Google Viewer is enabled it will show a preview of the following supported document types. Here is an example of using Google Preview for a PowerPoint presentation.

3. Menu item changes

The ‘All Categories’ and the ‘Single Category’ views have been merged into one ‘List’ view option.

The list view allows you to select any category to use as the base category from where documents will be shown. You can choose to include child categories or not.

4. Access Level Inheritance improvements

We further improved the document and categories access level inheritance. The actual access level is now being calculated on the fly and gets displayed in the edit form and list views. With this change you no longer need to set access permissions for each document and/or category which makes managing your permissions a lot easier.

5. Improved SEF Routing

We reworked the integrated SEF routing to improve readability and fixed a number of bugs. This gives better readable and simple URL’s. To get the file attached to a document now just add /file to the end of the document URL.

6. Added Support for Video and Audio Streaming

Video and audio files can now be streamed. If your browser can play the video or audio file it will do so.  Most modern browsers and mobile browsers can do this.

For example, if you upload an MP4 video file to your site, your browser will be able to start playing the file using its built-in video support, if available. A great example of this would be to head over to our DOCman 2.0 Demo Site and upload an MP4 video file and create a DOCman Document for it and then check things out in the frontend.

If you’re feeling adventurous, try accessing the video from your iPhone and watch your video start streaming instantly!

What’s next ?

We’re currently working full force on DOCman 2.0 Beta 4, which will include Joomla 3 compatibility. At the same time we will be releasing final Release Candidates for LOGman, FILEman and EXTman that will also include Joomla 3.0 compatibility!

Migration from DOCman 1.x will not be available until DOCman 2 is feature complete and will be part of our first Release Candidate (which will most likely be released after Beta 4).

The DOCman 2.0 Beta is available to all Joomlatools Club members. Not yet a member? Get a subscription and take the new DOCman 2.0 Beta for a spin today!

Its all looking really good :)
Cant wait for the migration tool so I can get started.

  • Richard Bankert

Does this have multiple file download capabilities?

  • Johan Janssens

Thanks Sarah ! Migration will be worked on once we hit release candidate phase, all focus is going now to Joomla 3.0 support for beta 4.

  • Johan Janssens

Hi Richard, what do you mean exactly with multiple file download capabilities ? How would that work ?

  • Richard Bankert

Sorry, the ability to download multiple files at once. Or the ability to download all files in a category. Some of the other Joomla extensions do this with check boxes. I just couldn’t remember if that was possible with docman. Really all I’m looking for is a download all function that would simply download all files in a category.

  • Richard Bankert

Another way to put it would be batch downloading.

  • Johan Janssens

Hi Richard, at the moment DOCman does not support selecting multiple files for download. This is also not on our to do list at the moment.

  • Dave Bishop

Sorry but that’s very disappointing to hear. Joomla 3 is a developer’s release and all of us running stable versions of 2.5 now have to WAIT for that? I’m am so sorry to be rude but I have been waiting for well over a year and do NOT think this is a priority unless you have a stable product for a stable 2.5. Sometimes I wish there was a different component so I didn’t have to deal with this.

I honestly don’t understand this Joomla 3 statement. We need you to “all focus is going to completing the features needed and migration abilities” How can I even use this v2 on sites with 1.6 if you are going to throw us under the bus for a version of Joomla that’s not even recommended to be installed for new sites by the Joomla developers themselfs. Just so you can claim it’s Joomla 3 compatible and get more sales? You should be ashamed. I bought a subscription with the new version being promised almost one and a half years ago. I even renewed it and am still waiting. Now I wait more for Joomla 3 baloney.

You guys are one of the most frustration bunch! Arrrgh.

  • Dave Bishop

Here, let’s look at this from my/our prospective. I bought this subscription based off a post in April 2011 Yes 2011. Quote = Yes folks, DOCman has been Nooku-fied and it’s coming soon! That was close to 2 years ago.

Reading on further in your posting. You say this DOCman 2.0 is now in the final stages of alpha development. We expect a first beta release by the end of this quarter (Q2) 2011.

why am I going to have to wait another 6 months so you can get Joomla 3
going  before I have a stable fully featured product I can migrate my
    1.6 sites to?????

  • Johan Janssens

Hi Dave, sorry to hear you are frustrated, still appreciate your feedback.

The past 3 years have been a great learning experience. One among many things we learned is that it is very hard to set deadlines. We just get too excited sometimes and overestimate our capabilities. We learned from that.
DOCman 2 is a completely new extension with a completely new database schema, a migration from 1.x is not straightforward and requires substancial work. We learned from the simple migration process from 1.5 to 1.6 lot’s of things can go wrong. We are 100% committed to making it possible to migrate 1.x installs but we also want to deliver a solution that works, not one that creates even more frustration.

  • Marcedwin

Can I use Docman 2 on a live site?
Going to install and use it on a live site for a client of mine. Otherwise I have to update/upgrade after the def release of 2.0. Is a hassle.

    I use Joomla 2.5.x

  • Johan Janssens

Hi, yes you can do so. DOCman 2 beta is production ready just not yet feature complete. For questions or issues please use our support forums.

  • Alfredo

Hi! I´m receiving a 324 (net::ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE) error when I try to save a new document in the beta 3 realease. Is it possible that there may be some php issue in the routine?

  • Johan Janssens

Hi Alfredo, for support questions please use our forums on the membercenter.

  • Alfredo

    Sorry, Johan

  • Dustyn Saint

Hi Johan, any update on when joomla 3.0 version will be ready? I’m itching to get going with docman on this……

  • Johan Janssens

Hi Dustyn, we are making good progress. Moving from development to testing at the moment. I don’t like to give out exact dates, those will only lead to frustration on both end when not met.

  • cyclinginform

Will DocMan 2.x be available for Joomla 1.5x websites?

  • Johan Janssens

No, DOCman 2.0 will only work on Joomla 2.5 and with beta 4 also on 3.0.

  • cyclinginform

Will Docman 2.x be able to sense the web browser and deliver the appropriate video content? At the moment it appears that Firefox doesn’t display H.264 video while apple devices do. Some video players are able to fall back to another format if the default format is not playable. Will Docman 2.x be able to manage this or can you set it to default to just download video content without trying to play it?

  • Johan Janssens

Right now DOCman 2 can stream data, this makes it possible to play video’s, music, and deal with downloads of large files. Serving the right file based on the browser is not supported. We not have any plans to add this in the short term. DOCman’s main focus is file downloads.

  • Christopher Ambler

Our latest sites are all being developed on Joomla 3, so the next beta, supporting J3 is a must-wait-for. Of course it’s not ready until it’s ready, but when it’s ready, we’re ready ;)
