It’s official! Today we’re announcing the DOCman 2.0 Beta release! We’ve quietly allowed our customers to use the DOCman 2.0 Beta 1 and 2 versions for a few weeks now and received great feedback.

DOCman 2 Beta - Document Manager

DOCman 2 beta is now ready for testing. Is it production ready? We think so! Some of our customers are already using it in production without problems. We still plan to release two more beta’s before DOCman 2 will be feature complete.

Key Features

The DOCman 2.0 Beta includes all features mentioned in our previous DOCman 2.0 Alpha Blog Post, plus these exciting new features:

1. We improved the administrator document filtering to make it easier to find recently created and edited documents. Various document state filters (published, unpublished, pending, etc.) have also been added.

2. Document and category access rights can now be inherited. You will find a new ‘inherit’ option in the access group settings. With this change you no longer need to set access permissions for each document and/or category which makes managing your permissions a lot easier.

3. The file uploader has been redesigned and improved. We increased the drag and drop area and added a ‘choose file button’ to make selecting files easier and quicker.

DOCman 2 Beta - File upload dialog

4. Publish/unpublish dates can now be set for documents to automatically publish or unpublish a document on your site.

5. ‘Save & New’ buttons have been added to the category manager to make it easier to quickly add categories when setting up your repository.

6. The document populate functionality has been simplified. The populate icon has been removed and its functionality integrated into the ‘Create Documents’ workflow available within the File Manager, making it fast and easy to add multiple files into a category!

DOCman 2 Beta - Batch create documents

7. We added a new ‘Register or Login to Download‘ configuration option. When enabled guests are able to see the download button but are redirected to the login page before downloading.

8. Categories now support category sorting in the frontend. You can sort categories by title, ordering or by created date.

9. Separate permissions for ‘view’ and ‘download‘ have been added. You can now define which user groups can only see the documents information and who can download the attached files.

10. Tons of smaller changes, user interface improvement and fixes…

What’s next ?

We’re currently wrapping up Beta 3 to fix more issues and introduce a few more features. After Beta 3 we are planning one more beta before releasing the first release candidate.

Beta 4 will include Joomla 3 compatibility. At the same time we will be releasing final release candidates for LOGman, FILEman and EXTman that will also include Joomla 3.0 compatibility!

The DOCman 2.0 Beta is available to all Joomlatools Club members. Not yet a member? Get a subscription and take the new DOCman 2.0 Beta for a spin today!

Great news!! Thanks. In the downloads area, the package still says DOCman 2.0.0 Beta 2. Is this correct?

  • Johan Janssens

That is correct, we have already released two beta’s, the latest is beta 2. Beta 3 will be coming soonish. Finishing up the last bits of testing this week.

  • Tobi Krösche

Can you say how long you will need to support Joomla 3.0 ?

  • Johan Janssens

Hi Tobi, we are working on releasing DOCman 2 beta 3 in the coming days. The next beta 4 will introduce Joomla 3.0 support.

Time wise we are expecting this beta beginning of February. At the same time we will be adding Joomla 3.0 support to all our other extensions, LOGman, FILEman and EXTman.

  • Tobi Krösche

     Thanks for the Infomation.

  • radu

    great software!
I would like to know when it will be available with translations / multilanguage support ?

  • Johan Janssens

Hi Radu, at the moment we don’t have language files available yet. Those will be created once DOCman 2 is feature complete which will be at the start of the release candidate phase. We first have two more beta’s to release.

I would like to know if you cant add a feature where you assign various email addressess to clients, and link the email to a category. so if customer a sends attachment 1 to a certain email address, it will go into a specific category. that will make populating so much easier. Thanks.

  • Johan Janssens

Hi, everything is possible offcourse but that is a rather complex feature you are talking about. If I understand you correctly you are looking for the ability to send documents through email to DOCman ?

  • Anonymous

Yes, itwill make it more user friendly for users and an easy process to get documents where you subscribe to a service. That will make it easy on the submitter, he can just add it to a distribution list. Thanks

  • Johan Janssens

Thanks Paul, I have created an internal ticket for this to our backlog. We will see if we can add this to a future version.

  • Fr. Miguel

    Will it support RSS feeds?

  • Johan Janssens

Yes, RSS support will be available in DOCman 2. This in on the list to be added before the stable version goes out.

Do you have an upgrade path for those using Docman 1.6 to migrate files/documents/categories to this new version?

  • Jack Hughes

Thank you so much for your fine work on Docman. I would like to stress how important getting a Joomla 3.0 compatible version of Docman out quickly. Docman is one of the last of the major extensions we use for Joomla to not have a J3 version out. I have had to delay 2 web projects because of this. Please do what you can to get a J3 version out quickly. Thank you!

  • Johan Janssens

Hi Jack, we hear you! We just released beta 3 today. All focus is now going to compatibility with Joomla 3.0 for beta 4.

  • Johan Janssens

We do not have an upgrade path yet. An migration solution will be worked on during the release candidate phase. Right now all our focus is going to Joomla 3 compatibility.

  • Ralf Longwitz

That’s good news! We’re just about to start a new project, we definitely need DocMan, and it’s the only non 3.0 ready component …

  • Johan Janssens

    It’s definitely coming.

  • Chiel Mannes

Is it possible to add one PDF in multiple Categories without uploading the file again?

  • Johan Janssens

Hi Chiel, yes that is possible, you can create multiple documents from the same file and add them to different categories. DOCman keeps track of all the documents you file is linked with.

  • Richard Bankert

How does the statistics look for this?

  • Johan Janssens

Hi Richard, not sure what you mean with that ?

  • Richard Bankert

Sorry, I did think after, that it might sound a little vague. What options are there for generating downloads reports. I run a couple websites that are solely focused on online downloads, so generating reports for both individual documents as well as categories is essential. Is this possible?

  • Johan Janssens

Hi Richard, DOCman 2.0 comes with a build in integration of Google Analytics, it doesn’t come yet with it’s own statistics we are still working at that. This will be added to LOGman.

Also DOCman 2 has an advanced plugin system that allows you to easily intregrate it with other online services or integrated it with other Joomla statistics extensions.

    Does that help ?

  • Richard Bankert

    Yes thanks.

  • Richard Bankert

One more question, can visitors download multiple files at once?

  • Opp Birmingham

Hi is there any way to have a share document link within the description? so that once the description has been written and published a user can email a link to another person so they can login and view/download?

  • Johan Janssens

To email the link, you need to publish the document on your site and the copy the site URL. Hope that helps.

  • Shiv Dindyal

I am using DOCman 2.0 I do not see much options to configure DOCman, I would like to know if i can view the document in a pop up instead of just downloading it. also how can i have several categories displaying under the same menu ?

  • Ricardo Nina

You know when a version compatible with joomla 3 will available?

  • Johan Janssens

Hi Ricardo, we do not know yet when exactly. We are aiming for later this month.
