When I wrote the post about common Joomla misconceptions, I forgot one myth. A lot of people seem to think all Joomla sites look alike. They’re saying it pushes you to fit a certain design concept. But every now and then you see a site that proves them wrong. In the end, the creativity of the designer is the only limit. You can’t blame your canvas if your painting sucks.

The new “Know Your Rights” website by the United Nations is one such site that shows beautiful Joomla design. People keeping up with the news on the Nooku.org site, probably already saw this, but I felt it was worth cross posting it.

It’s even more amazing when you know that the site was originally made in Flash. This caused some issues: it was hard to make changes, and the languages were hardcoded. It didn’t fit the UN’s workflow. By rebuilding it as a Joomla + Nooku site, they can now easily add languages when the translation is ready.

Wow, that is a fantastic looking website. It’s really refreshing to see a site which looks so different. Whilst it is true that Joomla websites don’t need to all look the same, so often they do!

indeed it does look quite neat, think there could have been a touch more usage of moo.fx to get the globe menu looking a little more like the flash one, but overall its neat. Personally i thought the bigger story would have been an entity as large as the UN using Joomla! and not some home made half baked system

X-Ception, just to let you know it’s not new that the UN are using Joomla… This “UNRIC United Nations Regional Information Centre” site has been Joomla for some time: http://www.unric.org/

yes, 99.9% of the joomla sites are lookalikes. Because most of the sites are not based on own designs. Most joomla users, just pop in (…) their content, and that’s it.
I have my doubts that the average Joomla user, who hasn’t any idea about xhtml or css will be able to produce a home made site.
